Peak District Photography Workshop: Summer Solstice Celebration – 21st June
Join me on the 21st of June for a special photography workshop celebrating the summer solstice in the Peak District. We’ll embrace the longest day of the year, capturing its unique light and atmosphere while exploring picturesque locations and honing our photography skills.
A Day of Learning and Capturing the Solstice:
Our itinerary is designed to make the most of the summer solstice:
- Waterfall and Woodland Photography: We’ll begin our day by exploring the beauty of Peak District waterfalls and woodlands. These locations offer respite from the midday sun and provide opportunities to practice long exposures, composition, and other camera techniques. Potential locations include Lathkill Tufa Weir and Padley Gorge.
- Tranquil Sunset Location: As the sun descends towards the horizon, we’ll head to a quieter location, away from the crowds often drawn to solstice events. This will allow us to focus on capturing the beauty of the sunset without distractions. A possible location is the atmospheric Magpie Mine.
- Flexible Itinerary: The exact locations we visit will be tailored to the conditions on the day, ensuring we capture the best possible images.
Workshop Highlights:
- Summer Solstice Celebration: Experience the unique atmosphere of the longest day and capture its special light.
- Suitable for All Levels: Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced photographer, you’ll receive personalized guidance and learn valuable techniques.
- 1-2-1 Tuition: I’ll divide my time equally among participants, ensuring everyone receives individual attention and support.
- Post-Processing Introduction: If time allows, we’ll have a session covering the basics of Lightroom and image editing.
Itinerary:
- 2:00 PM: Meet and greet, followed by our first photography location.
- 6:00 PM: Break for food and an optional introduction to Lightroom.
- Late Afternoon/Evening: Continue our photography journey, culminating in a sunset shoot at a carefully chosen location.
- 9:30 PM (approx.): Workshop concludes after sunset.
Learning and Skill Development:
Throughout the day, I’ll provide guidance and instruction on various photography techniques, including:
- Focusing techniques: Learn how to achieve sharp focus in different situations.
- Tripod usage: Master the art of using a tripod for stability, sharper images and the benefit of slowing your workflow down to aid composition.
- Filters vs. exposure blending: Understand when to use filters and when to rely on exposure blending techniques.
- Composition: Develop your compositional eye and learn how to create compelling images.
- Working with light: Learn how to effectively utilise natural light to enhance your photographs.
Additional Information:
- Difficulty: Easy. Most locations involve short walks of around 15 minutes each way. We may walk longer depending on conditions and group ability.
- Group Size: Maximum 4 participants for personalized attention.
- Included: Expert tuition, transport during the workshop, kit list, discount codes, and a pre-workshop questionnaire.

Difficulty Description
Workshop Difficulty: Easy (with some considerations)
This workshop is rated as “easy”, and most people should be able to attend and complete it comfortably. However, it’s important to understand the terrain and walking distances involved.
Walking Distance:
- You can expect to walk between 3 and 6 miles throughout the day, with breaks between locations.
Terrain:
- Locations are generally within a 15-minute walk from the car park, with return trips between each.
- While some paths are paved, you’ll also encounter natural trails with stable surfaces. These may include rocks, tree roots, and mud, which are unavoidable features of the natural landscape.
- Some sections may involve walking over steep ground, so a reasonable level of fitness is recommended.
Off-Trail Exploration:
- We may venture off the main path at certain photography locations. I will point out any potential hazards, but please be mindful of your footing and surroundings. If you have any concerns, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Key Points:
- While individual locations are relatively easy to access, the cumulative distance covered throughout the day can be significant.
- Please assess your own fitness level and comfort with walking over varied terrain before booking.
This workshop is designed to be enjoyable and accessible, but it’s important to be prepared for moderate walking and some uneven ground.
