Peak District Photography Workshop: Exploring Buxton’s Diverse Landscapes – 20th July

Join me on the 20th of July for a captivating photography workshop in the Peak District, where you’ll explore the beautiful and varied landscapes surrounding Buxton. This charming town, nestled amidst the Peak District National Park, boasts a unique mix of gritstone and limestone formations, offering a diverse range of photographic opportunities.

Buxton sits on the border between the White Peak, known for its rolling limestone hills, and the South-West Peak, characterised by dramatic gritstone edges. This unique location provides access to a fascinating variety of landscapes, making it an ideal setting for a photography workshop. I regularly run workshops in this area as it offers a great selection of locations with a lot of variety and some great spots to practise various technical and compositional elements.

Our Itinerary:

We’ll begin our day at 1:30 pm with a meet and greet at Poole’s Cavern car park. From there, we’ll embark on a photographic journey that includes:

  • Solomon’s Temple: We’ll start by visiting this Victorian hill marker on Grin Low, offering panoramic views across Buxton and a gentle warm-up for the day.
  • Three Shires Head: Next, we’ll head to Three Shires Head, a picturesque waterfall cascading under a historic packhorse bridge. Here, we’ll focus on capturing the beauty of moving water and practise using ND filters for long exposure photography.
  • Hitter Hill: We’ll then likely head to Hitter Hill, which offers easy access and stunning views over Parkhouse Hill and Chrome Hill – one of the best locations in the Peak District, in my opinion.
  • The Roaches: As sunset approaches, we may head to The Roaches, capturing its dramatic escarpments and the serene beauty of Roach End Barn.

Lunch and Image Review:

We’ll break for lunch around 5:00 pm, and if time allows, we’ll have a look at some of my images on a laptop to discuss basic processing techniques in Adobe Lightroom. The day will conclude after sunset, around 9:30 pm, allowing time to walk down.

Learning and Skill Development:

Throughout the day, I’ll provide guidance and instruction on various photography techniques, including:

  • Focusing techniques: Learn how to achieve sharp focus in different situations.
  • Tripod usage: Master the art of using a tripod for stability and sharper images.
  • Filters vs. exposure blending: Understand when to use filters and when to rely on exposure blending techniques.
  • Composition: Develop your compositional eye and learn how to create compelling images.
  • Working with light: Learn how to effectively utilise natural light to enhance your photographs.

I’m also happy to discuss more advanced techniques on a 1-2-1 basis or with the group, depending on your interests and skill levels.

What’s Included:

  • Expert guidance: Benefit from my experience and knowledge of the Peak District.
  • Small group size: With a maximum of 4 participants, you’ll receive personalised attention and plenty of 1-2-1 time.
  • Pre-workshop information: Upon booking, you’ll receive a confirmation email with meeting details, a kit list, discount codes, and a questionnaire to help me tailor the workshop to your needs.
  • Post-workshop support: Feel free to reach out to me after the workshop with any questions including access to my private Facebook group.

Weather Contingency:

The Peak District weather can be unpredictable, but don’t worry! I have plenty of alternative locations that are suitable for a variety of conditions. We may even do some ‘light chasing’ using forecasts, webcams, and my local knowledge to find the best spots. Regardless of the weather, you’ll gain valuable skills and capture stunning images.

Booking Information:

A £40 deposit is required to secure your place, with the balance due no later than 6 weeks before the workshop.
