Join me on a 6-day small-group photography workshop on the stunning Isle of Harris & Lewis. Capture breathtaking seascapes, long exposures, white sand beaches, expansive sand dunes, ancient standing stones, mountain vistas, and rugged cliffs.

These beautiful islands boast some of the world’s most incredible beaches, often topping global rankings, and it’s easy to see why. However, beyond the pristine sands, dramatic rocky landscapes await, including the iconic Callanish Stones. Harris, the southern island, offers exceptional coastal photography, where we will spend most of our time. Heading north to Lewis (which is not a separate island), the scenery changes dramatically, becoming more rugged and wild. The mountainous backdrop, particularly from Luskentyre or the road to Hushinish, adds to the visual drama.

One of the best aspects of Harris & Lewis is their ability to deliver captivating images regardless of the weather. Even in moody conditions, long exposures on the striking beaches create stunning results. Of course, while we all love golden light and sunsets, the ever-changing seascapes ensure there is always something unique to capture.

I first visited Harris & Lewis in 2018 and was so captivated that I extended my stay from one to two weeks. Since then, I have run multiple workshops here, each offering a fresh experience due to the island’s ever-changing conditions.

Workshop Dates & Accommodation

This workshop is scheduled for the last week of March, leading into April, ensuring a more sociable sunrise time of 7:00 AM after the clocks change.

We will stay in a charming 4-bedroom self-catering cottage along the scenic Golden Road, overlooking the sea. I have used this accommodation for every workshop due to its ideal location, just 20 minutes from Luskentyre and close to many prime photography spots. Staying in a self-catering cottage provides flexibility, allowing us to mingle, process photos, and socialise in a relaxed setting.

The cottage includes WiFi, kitchen facilities, a washer/dryer, a lounge, and a dining area. There are four bedrooms and two bathrooms, providing private rooms for each guest. Towels and linens are provided. If you wish to bring a partner or friend and share a room, a 50% discount is available for the second participant (one space available). Room selection is based on booking order.

Below are some photos of the local area, including the cottage itself in the first photo. These were all taken with a drone but will give you an idea of the area we will be staying in and how beautiful it is. While we won’t be doing much photography from the cottage itself, previous clients have explored the surroundings, capturing images of old abandoned barns and nearby lochans.

The cottage offers WiFi, kitchen facilities, a washer/dryer, a lounge, and a dining area for your comfort.

Travel & Arrival

The workshop begins on Day 1 at 14:00, meeting at the cottage in Grosebay (10 minutes from the Tarbert ferry). The ferry timetable is not yet available, but I will adjust the schedule accordingly once confirmed. If you are traveling on foot, I can meet you in Tarbert.

You are responsible for arranging your travel to the island. Travel options include:

  • Ferries: Uig to Tarbert, Ullapool to Stornoway
  • Flights: Fly into Stornoway

Important: If you arrive in Stornoway on foot, be aware that no public transport runs on Sundays. You may wish to arrive on Saturday and stay in Tarbert.

Booking & Workshop Approach

Upon booking, you will receive a confirmation email containing:

  • Meeting details
  • Kit list
  • Discount codes for equipment partners
  • A short questionnaire to help tailor the experience to the group

This workshop focuses on sunrise and sunset photography, with breaks during the day. However, if conditions are favorable, we may extend our shooting sessions. Flexibility is key—Scottish weather is unpredictable, so I will adjust plans daily to maximize photographic opportunities. If the weather is poor, we may skip sunrise but spend more time on the coast during the day.

We will also hold post-processing sessions at the cottage during downtime or in the evenings.

I aim to create a relaxed yet informative experience, guiding you as I would approach a solo photography trip.

What You’ll Learn

Throughout the week, we will cover:
Basic techniques – Focusing, tripod use, filters vs. exposure blending, composition, working with light
Advanced techniques – As the week progresses, we’ll build on more complex skills
Editing & review – Optional image review sessions where we can showcase and discuss our work

Physical Requirements

This workshop is rated easy, with most locations within a 15-minute walk from the car. If you have any health concerns, please contact me before booking.

Itinerary (Subject to Change)

Difficulty Description

Below is an explanation of the difficulty for the workshop. It will also largely be dictated by your own perception and also your previous experience in this kind of environment. The rating is a rough guide and in context to the type of workshop e.g. a hill-walking workshop moderate is different to a standard day workshop moderate. I have tried to explain more about the day in the description above also.

This workshop is listed as easy. Most locations are within 15 minutes walk with returns to the car between locations.. You may be cover some steep ground over mixed-terrain. Some footpaths may be paved, however please also expect natural trails of a stable surface where you may encounter natural and unavoidable features such as rocks, tree roots, mud etc. It is unlikely we will be off the beaten track and these paths will be well used and popular. Once we arrive at our photography location we may be off the main path and as such extra care must be taken with any potential hazards. I will advise if I can see any hazards and if you are unsure, please ask.
