Join Me for a 5-Day Photography Workshop on the Stunning Isle of Skye

Embark on a photography adventure to the picturesque Isle of Skye, where we’ll explore world-class landscapes and capture its rugged beauty.

As an avid lover of Skye with over 15 years of experience, including running workshops here since 2017, I’ll guide you to the best spots at the perfect times, tailored to the ever-changing conditions. With a small group size, you’ll receive plenty of one-on-one tuition, ensuring a truly enriching experience as we explore this misty island together.

Why November?
This workshop is scheduled for late November to take advantage of more sociable sunrise and sunset times, while also avoiding the crowds. The island will be quieter, and the midges will be long gone. I’ve run many successful workshops during this time, capturing amazing light and conditions. Trust me, the weather can be unpredictable in any season, and November offers unique opportunities for breathtaking shots.

Workshop Overview:
Our main focus will be on capturing sunrise and sunset each day, making the most of the golden hours. As the daylight hours are short at this time of year, we will have the opportunity to be out during the day also, with the potential for good light. We’ll also have some downtime in the cottage for meals, post-processing, and to discuss techniques, with a potential return during the day after sunrise. The schedule may shift depending on the weather, but we’ll be flexible and adapt to the conditions. I’ll provide a rough plan the evening before, based on the latest forecast.

Accommodation & Transport:
We’ll stay in a spacious, well-equipped self-catering cottage in Portree, giving us the flexibility to come and go as we please. The cottage is just minutes from the town centre, and transport around the island will be provided. There are four bedrooms, each with a double bed and its own bathroom, ensuring you have privacy and comfort. Linen and towels are included.

If you’d like to bring a partner or friend, you can enjoy a 50% discount on the second space (available for those willing to share a room). The cottage also offers Wi-Fi, washer/dryer, and all the amenities we’ll need.

What to Expect:
I run relaxed workshops that require flexibility, as the Scottish weather can be unpredictable. I can demonstrate my workflow at locations, but my focus will be on helping you capture your best shots. We’ll work through a range of techniques, from basics like focusing and composition to advanced methods such as exposure blending. There will also be plenty of opportunities for processing sessions and sharing images if you’re comfortable.

Watch the video below from previous workshops to see some of the sights we may see.

For those traveling on the first day, I recommend stopping at Fort William or Inverness the day before, or you can take the direct bus service to Portree. I’m also happy to pick you up from the bus station in Portree.

Itinerary Overview:
Here’s a rough idea of the workshop schedule (subject to change based on weather conditions):

  • Day 1: Arrive by 11:00 AM, meet and greet, and head out for sunset at Elgol, possibly stopping at Loch Cill Chriosd on the way.
  • Day 2: Sunrise at The Quirang, then visit Kilt Rock Waterfall and Brides Veil Falls, and sunset at Neist Point.
  • Day 3: Sunrise at Sligachan Bridge or Allt Dearg Mor, followed by a visit to the Fairy Pools and sunset at Talisker Bay.
  • Day 4: Sunrise at the Old Man of Storr (a challenging walk), followed by sunset at Elgol or Neist Point.
  • Day 5: Sunrise at Loch Fada, then a debrief before check-out at 10 AM.

Most locations are within 15 minutes of the car, but some, like The Old Man of Storr and the Fairy Pools, require a bit more effort. I’ll always offer alternative locations for those who prefer easier walks.

  • £400 non-refundable booking fee is required to secure your place, with the balance due 8 weeks before the workshop.
  • You can pay the full workshop fee or the balance through the website using your preferred credit method.

Difficulty Description

Below is an explanation of the difficulty for the workshop. It will also largely be dictated by your own perception and also your previous experience in this kind of environment. The rating is a rough guide and in context to the type of workshop e.g. a hill-walking workshop moderate is different to a standard day workshop moderate. I have tried to explain more about the day in the description above also.

This workshop is listed as easy/moderate. Most locations are within 15 minutes walk with returns to the car between locations. The Storr and Fairly pools are much longer, with the Storr being the hardest at a hours walk up steep terrain. This is an optional location and we may also not do it if the weather doesn’t look favourable. You may be covering some steep ground over mixed-terrain. Some footpaths may be paved, however please also expect natural trails of a stable surface where you may encounter natural and unavoidable features such as rocks, tree roots, mud etc. It is unlikely we will be off the beaten track and these paths will be well used and popular. Once we arrive at our photography location we may be off the main path and as such extra care must be taken with any potential hazards. I will advise if I can see any hazards and if you are unsure, please ask.
