Kinder Scout Photography Adventure: Unveiling the Hidden Gems of the Northern Edges

Are you ready for a challenging and rewarding photography experience in the Peak District? Join me on a unique adventure to Kinder Scout, the highest peak in the region, where we’ll explore its dramatic northern edges, capture stunning compositions, and uncover the hidden beauty of this expansive plateau.

Why Kinder Scout’s Northern Edges?

Kinder Scout often evokes mixed reactions, but its northern edges hold a special allure for those seeking unique and less-photographed landscapes. During the summer months, when the sun sets further north, these edges come alive with breathtaking views and dramatic light, offering a truly rewarding experience for adventurous photographers.

Our Kinder Scout Exploration:

  • Ascending Fair Brook: Our journey begins with an invigorating ascent via Fair Brook, a picturesque route that winds up the northern flanks of Kinder Scout. Along the way, we’ll encounter a series of captivating waterfalls, each offering unique photographic opportunities. We’ll pause to capture the beauty of these cascading waters, including the classic composition of the trident waterfall, framed against the dramatic backdrop of Kinder Scout itself.
  • Discovering the Boxing Gloves: Once we reach the plateau, a sense of expansive wilderness will surround us. We’ll set our sights on Fairbrook Naze, our ultimate sunset destination. As we traverse the northern edge, we’ll encounter the intriguing Boxing Gloves rock formation, aptly named for its resemblance to a pair of boxing gloves. The summer light will illuminate this unique feature, creating a captivating subject for our cameras.
  • Capturing the Essence of Fairbrook Naze: Our main objective is Fairbrook Naze, a remarkable gritstone formation that commands attention. Its shape and texture offer a striking contrast to the surrounding landscape, and its position overlooking our ascent route provides a sense of place and journey. As the sun dips towards the horizon, Fairbrook Naze will be bathed in golden light, creating a truly magical scene for us to capture.
  • Unveiling Bonus Locations: Depending on the time and conditions, we may have the opportunity to explore additional compositions along the northern edges. Perhaps we’ll discover hidden gems or venture further to the enigmatic Seal Stones, adding further variety and intrigue to our photographic adventure.

What Awaits You:

  • A Photographic Walk to Remember: This workshop is not for the faint of heart! It involves a considerable amount of walking (up to 8 miles) over hilly terrain. A good level of fitness and prior hillwalking experience are highly recommended to ensure you can fully enjoy the experience.
  • Immersed in the Landscape: Compared to my other workshops, we’ll spend more time walking between locations, allowing us to truly immerse ourselves in the landscape and appreciate the beauty of Kinder Scout. We’ll have ample time to discuss photography, share ideas, and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow photographers.
  • Unveiling Hidden Gems: This workshop is designed for those who crave adventure and seek to explore less-photographed locations. We’ll venture beyond the typical tourist trails and capture the unique character of Kinder Scout’s northern edges.

Our Itinerary:

  • Meeting: We’ll meet near the former Snake Inn, a historic landmark that evokes the spirit of the Peak District. From there, we’ll embark on our ascent via Fair Brook, enjoying the picturesque scenery and anticipating the photographic treasures that await us.
  • Daytime: We’ll spend the day capturing the beauty of the Fair Brook waterfalls, exploring the expansive plateau, and photographing the intriguing Boxing Gloves rock formation.
  • Sunset: As the sun begins its descent, we’ll position ourselves at Fairbrook Naze, ready to capture the magical moment when the landscape is bathed in golden light.
  • Evening: With memories and images captured, we’ll begin our descent back to the car park, a journey of approximately 1 hour. As darkness falls, we’ll rely on our head torches to guide us, reflecting on the day’s adventures.

Learning and Skill Development:

Throughout the day, I’ll be by your side, providing expert guidance and instruction on a variety of photography techniques, including:

  • Focusing techniques: Learn how to achieve sharp focus in different situations, ensuring your images are crisp and clear.
  • Tripod usage: Master the art of using a tripod for stability, sharper images, and the benefit of slowing down your workflow to aid composition.
  • Filters vs. exposure blending: Understand when to use filters and when to rely on exposure blending techniques to achieve the desired effects in your images.
  • Composition: Develop your compositional eye and learn how to create compelling images that draw the viewer in.
  • Working with light: Learn how to effectively utilise natural light to enhance your photographs, capturing the mood and atmosphere of the scene.

Additional Information:

  • Difficulty: Medium/Challenging. Requires a good level of fitness and hillwalking experience due to the distance covered and uneven terrain.
  • Group Size: To ensure personalized attention and a relaxed learning environment, the maximum group size is limited to 4 participants.
  • Included: Expert tuition, transport during the workshop, a detailed kit list, discount codes for photography equipment, and a pre-workshop questionnaire to help me tailor the day to your needs.

Important Note: The descent to the trident waterfall can be tricky, involving uneven and potentially slippery surfaces. Please assess your comfort level with this type of terrain before booking.
