Waterfall Photography Workshop: Exploring the Cascades of North Eryri – 14th June

Join me on the 14th of June for a captivating photography workshop exploring the stunning waterfalls and rivers of North Eryri (Snowdonia). We’ll master long exposure techniques, experiment with filters, and capture the beauty of these dynamic landscapes.

Why Waterfalls in June?

While June may bring long daylight hours, it’s an ideal time to photograph waterfalls. Overcast conditions enhance the beauty of these cascading waters, creating a magical atmosphere. This workshop is designed to embrace those conditions and capture stunning images regardless of the weather.

Our Waterfall Adventure:

  • Fairy Glen: We’ll begin our journey at the enchanting Fairy Glen, a deep gorge with a picturesque river. Here, we’ll practice long exposures and filter techniques, capturing the smooth flow of water and the captivating leading lines created by the foam.
  • Alternative Location: If conditions at Fairy Glen are unsuitable due to wet weather, we’ll head to Llanrwst and photograph the historic bridge and ivy-covered tearooms along the riverbank.
  • Swallow Falls: We’ll make a quick stop at the impressive Swallow Falls, capturing its dramatic beauty with various techniques.
  • Ogwen Valley or Llanberis: We’ll venture further into the heart of Snowdonia, choosing between the picturesque falls near Ogwen Cottage or the captivating cascades along the Watkin Path.
  • Ceunant Mawr Waterfall: If conditions are right, we’ll visit the impressive Ceunant Mawr Waterfall in Llanberis, capturing its powerful flow after recent rainfall.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Waterfall Wonderland: Explore a variety of stunning waterfalls, each offering unique photographic opportunities.
  • Long Exposure Mastery: Learn how to capture the magic of waterfalls with long exposure techniques, creating ethereal effects and showcasing the power of moving water.
  • Filter Techniques: Experiment with different filters to control light and enhance your waterfall photography.
  • Weatherproof Adventure: This workshop is designed to thrive in various weather conditions, making the most of overcast skies and showcasing the beauty of waterfalls in different light.
  • Post-Processing Introduction: During our midday break, I’ll provide an introduction to Adobe Lightroom and basic post-processing techniques.

Itinerary:

  • 2:00 PM: Meet and greet near Betws Y Coed (or join me from near Wrexham).
  • Afternoon: Explore Fairy Glen (or Llanrwst alternative), Swallow Falls, and either Ogwen Valley or Llanberis waterfalls.
  • Midday: Enjoy a break for refreshments and a post-processing session.
  • Late Afternoon/Evening: Continue our photography adventure at our chosen waterfall locations.

Learning and Skill Development:

Throughout the day, I’ll provide guidance and instruction on various photography techniques, including:

  • Focusing techniques: Learn how to achieve sharp focus in different situations.
  • Tripod usage: Master the art of using a tripod for stability, sharper images and the benefit of slowing your workflow down to aid composition.
  • Filters vs. exposure blending: Understand when to use filters and when to rely on exposure blending techniques.
  • Composition: Develop your compositional eye and learn how to create compelling images.
  • Working with light: Learn how to effectively utilise natural light to enhance your photographs.
